Even though the former Canadian NHL center has kept his family out of the public eye, he is known to have four siblings, Anne Carbonneau, Robert Carbonneau, Denis Carbonneau, and Marcel Carbonneau. The 62-year-old has three children with his wife Line Carbonneau and they are Anne-Marie and Kristina.

Guy ventured into his hockey career in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Chicoutimi Saguenéens. During the NHL draft in 1979, the Canadian athlete was selected by Montreal Canadiens as 44th overall after a superb performance at Saguenéens with 182 points. He played a total of 18 seasons throughout his career in the NHL as a center for the NFL teams Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, and Dallas Stars. He played 12 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens and ended his career with the Dallas Stars playing 5 seasons. Before that, he was traded to St. Louis Blues by the Canadiens for a year. In the year 2000, after leading the Dallas Stars to the finals of the Stanley Cup, they were defeated by New Jersey Devils. He then brought his whole 18-year career in the NHL to an end.
